4 Types of Visuals You Need to Show Off your Business Offer

In an age of everything-made-visual, content is king. We don’t read as much as we used to. Some studies even claim our modern average attention span has dropped to around 10 seconds (let’s hope they are wrong!). Modern businesses definitely need good visuals to attract and engage with new customers. We all know about photography and images, yes. Yet as reliable as they are, there are many other alternatives, and many other techniques and possibilities to choose from.

When deciding which visuals to use, let’s first consider the purpose and scope. One of the main reasons to use visuals in your business is to show off the product. Make the customer admire and crave it. Reveal the best parts. I work with many clients and visual content producers alike, and this is what I have learned so far:

  1. Video. This one is quite obvious, but it’s not as widely used as it could seem at first sight. Pictures still account for the most widely requested form of visual content, but videos are getting more popular, especially now that they can be done in a simple and cheap way. A good example of this growing popularity is Instagram, where videos now compete with images, and the platform’s hybrid look comes closer to TikTok content. Through videos, you can showcase your product in a more coherent way. And, if well-produced and designed, they also offer context, film-like imagery, and experience to viewers who are more likely to engage with inspiring videos, especially Gen Z. Sure, videos take more time to produce, and they are more expensive, but they are totally worth it in the long run, and useful for every purpose, company, and industry

  2. Drone Footage. This one is newer, and it’s quickly becoming very popular. The good news is that owning a drone has become affordable and easy to pilot. They are especially useful for events, cultural heritage, and real estate projects. Besides being increasingly popular for events and cultural media coverage, they are also useful when showcasing a product offered online, including real estate and short-term rentals. Drone photography is useful, but drone videos offer even more possibilities, including an unusual perspective and a more immersive experience. And drone videos are easy to edit. If a client’s budget is very tight, some models even make it possible for smartphones to be lifted by the drone (but of course the quality is not as good). So, how should you pick your drone? Well there are only a handful of big brands, so choosing the right model is easy. There are some limitations though, especially because drone licenses are becoming more and more necessary in most countries, and some geographical areas might be restricted. It still is an amazing technique to catch the end customers’’ attention and show your product from a special point of view.

  3. Virtual Tours. A step forward in the use of technology, virtual tours range from something as simple as panoramic/3D photos to complex creations of virtual reality. It’s especially useful for real estate photography projects and cultural heritage, in particular for emblematic sites like palaces, museums, or castles. Just like with drones, virtual tours help give a more complete overview of the products or locations, allowing users to explore them better, even if the experience remains purely virtual. The most advanced systems even allow users to interact with the product. Some of the most important museums around the world have already implemented virtual tour systems, including Musei Vaticani or Louvre, and there are many other interesting projects that have gone far beyond, such as Google Arts and Culture. New technologies are making virtual tours even easier and cheaper. For example, the Ricoh Theta camera stands out in the camera market, and Matterport is another powerful and efficient platform to carry out 3D virtual projects.

  4. Floor plans and planimetry. Finally, a more technical, low-key yet very helpful tool is the use of floor plans, especially in real estate and short-term rental management. Recently, this technology has been made available on smartphone apps, and floor plans can be created with a cell phone camera (and patience and skills) in a precise and efficient way. The best floor plan apps on the market are Cubicasa or Floorplanner, among others.

The techniques described above give online businesses a wide range of resources to attract and engage with customers in a powerful way, especially as visuals take a more central place in people’s minds and as the competition grows more fierce in any given market.
